Questions & Answers About Seizures
What is a seizure?
A seizure is a symptom of many types of disorders of the central nervous system. Brain injuries and neurological conditions like epilepsy cause seizures. Epilepsy is a diagnosis consisting of unpredictable episodes of seizures that cause unusual behavior, sensations, and even a loss of consciousness. During a seizure, some people stare blankly for a short period, others exhibit frantic jerking movements with their arms or legs, and others lose consciousness. About one 1 in 26 people Americans will develop epilepsy, a disorder characterized by unpredictable, recurrent seizures (Epilepsy Foundation). Severity and frequency vary widely. Still, even those with a mild seizure disorder require treatment, as it can be dangerous if a seizure is sustained during certain activities like driving or swimming.
What Causes Seizures?
There are a variety of different types of seizures but all are caused by a disruption of nerve cell activity in the brain. These disruptions and surges can be the result of genetics, head trauma, tumors, strokes or certain infectious diseases. Seizure disorders are related to a brain that has lost stability. If you suffer from seizures, you can learn to regulate and stabilize your brain through neurofeedback training.
Can neurofeedback training reduce or eliminate seizure disorders?
Yes, seizure disorders like epilepsy respond well to neurofeedback training. Drugs and often surgery are routinely used to treat seizures and epilepsy. However, for those looking for a natural, risk-free approach, neurofeedback training can provide effective treatment for people with all types of seizure disorders. It can be beneficial in instances of brain damage, whether the result of disease or illness, and brain abnormalities. It can help restore your brain’s function and resolve its dysregulation, though it is not a “cure.” One study showed that 74% of participants reduced the frequency of their seizures through the use of neurofeedback training. Through neurofeedback training, the brain can learn to regulate and stabilize the nerve disruptions that cause their condition. This drug-free, non-invasive treatment method was first studied at UCLA in the early 1970s. See more research.
