Questions & Answers About Anxiety and panic attacks
What is anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious or stressed out on occasion, but people who suffer from a true anxiety disorder experience severe, ongoing symptoms that interfere with their day-to-day functioning. There are numerous types of anxiety disorders, including phobias, test anxiety, PTSD, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and social anxiety disorders. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, anxiety is the most common mental illness in this country, some 40 million adults, or 18% of the population, suffer from anxiety, as well as one in eight children. Research shows that untreated, children who have an anxiety disorder do poorly in school, suffer socially, and are more likely to engage in substance abuse. Symptoms of an anxiety disorder include excessive worry and fear, panic attacks, self-doubt, problems with sleep, and frequent stomach issues, such as indigestion, constipation or diarrhea.
What are panic attacks?
Also known as an anxiety attack, these can represent a life changing condition that can disrupt every aspect of enjoying a normal life. They can occur without reason, and due to the very nature of the anxiety attack itself, are very difficult to control on your own. The symptoms include all those associated with regular anxiety, accompanied by very rapid heart-rate, shortness of breath, and an overwhelming sense of fear.
What occurs in the brain that causes some people to suffer from anxiety and not others?
Research shows that anxiety disorders are related to heightened Beta (High Frequency) brainwaves that occur on the right side of the brain. These types of brain waves occur naturally when a person is awake and concentrating. Too much of a good thing, though, can lead to a build-up of too much anxiety and worry, so that it becomes very draining on brain energy, and can lead to dramatic symptoms in real life.
How can neurofeedback training eliminate my anxiety?
Anxiety and panic attacks are usually treated with medication. However, it doesn’t work the same way with everyone, and never completely solves the problem. Furthermore, drugs can also cause undesirable side effects
At Carlton NeuroFeedback Center we use an advanced technology, called a qEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) to measure and analyze – in real time – the electrical flow in each lobe of the brain (frontal, parietal, central, temporal and occipital). The qEEG allows us to create a custom training protocol to bring your brain waves into balance. This helps the brain function more normally, reducing or eliminating your symptoms. A neurofeedback training program, which is non-invasive and pain-free, uses the brain’s natural ability to learn in order to help it heal.
